On the back of a 6-0 pre season win against local rivals Marton Furness, the men’s 1’s were optimistic for the start of the season. An early start against Uni of Durham kicked us off and we started on the front foot from minute 1.
Within 10 minutes we were 3-0 up and playing some great hockey. High pressing from the forwards caused high turnovers from the midfielders. This then led to some great team goals as well as winning some PCs.
Durham did score before half time but we added another 2 and it was 5-1 to Norton at the half time whistle.
The second half started in the same manor, despite Norton being down to 10 after a Muzzie green card had him sat on the naughty step. A couple more goals came and then another trip for a Norton player to the naughty step… this time skipper Oli for a body check (apparently). Not long after going back to 11 players, Luke decided it was his turn for a naughty step visit but he fancied a little longer. A deliberate foul off the ball, followed by a bit of needless chat led to a 10 minute yellow and a deserved DOD vote from the lads.
The game finished 9-1 and despite not getting the clean sheet we were thoroughly happy with our opening day victory.
There were hat tricks from Oli W and Tom T as well as goals from Hector, Luke and Tom S. Man of the match went to debut boy Mikey, with D**k of the day obviously going to Luke.
It’s a week off for the boys now after Whitley Bay withdrew from the league, and we take on local rivals in Stockton for our next match.
